What Are The Treatment Options For Thyroid Eye Disease?
1. Medical management
For mild disease, the priority is comfort and protection: lubricating drops and lifestyle changes. A prominent eye can be masked at this stage with steroid injections. For moderate to severe active disease steroid medication and immunosuppression is considered. The aim is to shorten the active phase and limit lasting damage.
2. Orbital decompression surgery (for bulging eyes)
When the eyes remain pushed forward after the disease settles, orbital decompression creates more room behind the eye by reshaping a small amount of bone and fat. This allows the eye to settle back into a more natural position.
3. Eyelid surgery
TED often pulls the upper or lower lids back, creating the wide, startled “stare” and exposing the eye. Eyelid repositioning surgery brings the lids back to a natural height, protects the surface of the eye, and softens the appearance.
