What is Ocular Oncology?

Most lumps and bumps around the eyes are not alarming – a stye, a cyst, a mole or chalazion. But a small number are eyelid skin cancers, and these can be quiet and easy to mistake for something innocent. The good news is that when they are caught early, eyelid cancers are highly treatable.

Dr Sumer Doctor is an oculoplastic and ocular oncology surgeon in Mumbai, fellowship-trained in both eyelid surgery and eye cancer which puts him in a unique position to evaluate and treat these lumps and bumps.

Most Eyelid Lumps Are Harmless

The common ones include:
  • Chalazion / stye – a blocked oil gland causing a tender or firm lump in the lid.

  • Cyst – a smooth, fluid-filled swelling

  • Nevus (mole) — a dark coloured spot

  • Seborrhoeic keratosis — a rough, grape-like growth

  • Skin tag / papilloma and xanthelasma (soft yellow cholesterol patches near the inner corner)

Real Patients From Our Practice

A skin cancer caught early. An elderly gentleman came in with a lump on his eyelid. A biopsy confirmed it was a sebaceous gland carcinoma, a rare eye cancer. Because it was caught early we were able to remove it completely and reconstruct the eyelid.

Ocular2

A bump near a child’s eye A five-year-old girl was brought in with a small bump near the inner corner of her eye. It turned out to be a dermoid cyst, which we removed through a hidden incision and scar.

ocular3

A large eyelid cancer, rebuilt for form and function. A gentleman developed a recurrence of a tumor after a surgery done
elsewhere. Diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelid. After removing it completely, we reconstructed the eyelid restoring both a natural appearance and a lid.
